Every Kind of People: Rejy

Updated: Mar 31, 2022

Rejy Drayton is doing one of the things he loves: skateboarding in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem.
Every Kind of People: Rejy D.

You know I’m not sure what I enjoy more: capturing these Every Kind of People participants or sharing their stories. I believe I very much enjoy both. This world is chocked full of extraordinary folks. FULL! Enough small talk…let’s get into it. Today we’re sharing the story of a young creative who is leaving his mark on the world.

Let’s do the basics first: who are you (it’s good to have a name you know)? What do you stand for?

I am Larrej Drayton but I prefer most people call me Rejy. I’m a digital creative, social media manager, influencer, and music teacher. What I stand for is a great question. I guess if I had to put it into words, I’m all about education, equitable education of the whole person. I teach music but that puts me in the unique position to teach about literally everything. I teach math, science, philosophy, literature, psychology, theology, and the list goes on all through my music class. That’s where my passion is, even in my social media and influencer work. I’m always gonna be a teacher, I think.

What are a few of your favorite things or hobbies? How do you relax and relate?

Raindrops on roses, and whiskers on kittens lol. Nah, I’m a really simple guy. I like good music, good food, and good art. I know these things are subjective but I appreciate the work that people put into things. I relax by dissociating through books about nothing, eclectic music, and drama-filled television or taking a walk. I love getting out in nature so I guess that would be my favorite thing. Spending time with friends and family or just going for a walk in the park with my dog.

Rejy often visits Collyer Brothers park when he wants to get away from the city hustle and bustle.

People often ask others about their job, but we recognize we are more than “what we do”. What story are you telling with your life? We wanna know what gets you out of the bed each morning.

So, I’m a huge Beyonce fan. She has a song called “I was here” and that song has pretty much been the soundtrack to my life. I wake up every morning intending to make a difference to someone. Telling them a story that inspires them to do something different or make a change for the better. I don’t want to tell people what to think by any means but I would like to be the one to expand your thinking or give you the tools to want to dig deeper into something to form your own opinions and conclusions. That’s my favorite part of teaching, getting into discussions with my students that don’t have the right answer but promoting that critical thinking. I get to do that on a larger scale with social media, and that’ what I love.

This film project is my personal, creative project. Are you working on anything right now or aspire to create something in the future?

Actually yeah, I’m working on a podcast with my best friend. It’s called “I’m Confused” and it’s for the new generation of digital creators and young professionals who have no clue what’s coming next or what to do. You can check it out wherever you find your podcasts.

At G Photography we believe in being social. How can readers follow your projects and/or your journey?

I’m @thisisrejy on all social media platforms and you can follow the podcast on Instagram @imconfused_thepodcast.

Rejy is a whole mood, so we thoroughly enjoyed capturing him on film. If you wanna share your story and help me out with my project, send me a note here: Every Kind of People.
